Male Fertility & Sexual Medicine Specialists to Offer No-cost Zika Virus Testing to San Diego Area Fertility Patients and Sperm Donors
Dr. Martin Bastuba, founder and medical director of Male Fertility & Sexual Medicine Specialists and the Fertility Center of California is now offering free Zika virus testing for patients who qualify and sperm donors at San Diego area locations for both practices. Given the proximity of San Diego to South America, Central America and Mexico and the large numbers of tourists in the area, testing for the virus is strongly encouraged in treatments where sexual transmission of diseases is possible.
“It is extremely important that our patients feel secure about their health, and their children, so they feel safe moving forward with their family planning goals,” stated Dr. Martin Bastuba about this important safety measure.
The Zika virus outbreak is currently widespread in South America and Central America. Initially, it was thought that the Zika virus was transmitted by mosquitoes alone. However, doctors now know that the virus can be sexually-transmitted under some circumstances. Because the Fertility Center of California and Male Fertility & Sexual Medicine Specialists work closely with patients on fertility treatments including sperm donation, male infertility and male sexual health, both facilities will free testing to all patients and sperm donors until further notice.
There is currently no vaccine for the Zika virus, and those who are most at risk are the fetuses of pregnant women. The Zika virus is linked to a serious birth defect known as microcephaly, a neurodevelopmental disorder which causes infants to be born with a reduced head and brain size. Women who are trying for a pregnancy or interested in building their families are cautioned to consider testing for the Zika virus prior to attempting conception either naturally or through assisted reproductive services.
