How Is Peyronie’s Disease Treated?
Peyronie’s disease is a condition in which hard lumps of plaque form in the soft tissue of the penis, causing a bend to form. This plaque can occur on either side of the penis and is found in 10% of men. Symptoms of Peyronie’s disease include pain during an erection, weak erections and difficulty ejaculating.
Some cases of Peyronie’s disease can be mild, with symptoms that are unpleasant but do not impact the patient’s daily life or sex life. Other cases can be quite severe, with the patient’s quality of life deeply affected.
How is Peyronie’s disease treated?
There are a few different forms of treatment for Peyronie’s disease offered at the Male Fertility & Sexual Medicine Specialists:
Xiaflex®
Xiaflex is an injectable therapy that breaks down the plaque that forms with Peyronie’s disease. It consists of four treatment cycles, each typically taking around 4-6 weeks to complete. It is FDA approved, and most men describe their experience with Xiaflex as tolerable with a local anesthetic being used prior to the injection. Patients are able to receive this treatment in the office and leave on their own just a few minutes post-injection. If you are interested in Xiaflex therapy, please contact our office today.
Intralesional Verapamil
Intralesional Verapamil is an injectable therapy that can be used to break down non-calcified plaque in the penis. The injection can take place in our office, and it typically takes around 6 injections to complete treatment. Your doctor will need to perform an ultrasound to ensure that the plaque in your penis is not calcified prior to using this specific injection.
Surgical treatment
In the event that other medical treatments fail, or quick relief is required, surgery may be an option. There are two surgical approaches that can be used in Peyronie’s disease: removal of the plaque followed by placement of a patch of skin or artificial material, or “pinching” tissue from the side of the penis opposite from where the plaque is present, which fixes any bending that may occur from the disease. Your physician will be able to recommend which course of action is best for your individual situation.
